Texturing process with Bodypaint 3D
<< < Page: 1, 2, 3, 4,> >>

In this tutorial, I wanna show you the process of texturing this Alien character using mainly Photoshop along with Bodypaint3D for cleaning up seams and texture projection. I won't explain in details the texturing process in Photoshop, which I guess most people would already know. I am planning to focus more on how you can use Bodypaint3D to achieve things that are hard to achieve in Photoshop.

I will try to explain as simple as possible of the steps in Bodypaint3D. Still, it would be easier if you have basic Bodypaint3D knowledge. Also, I have prepared the Alien head model with UV and starting texture in PSD format at the end of this tutorial.

Hope you will find this tutorial useful. I would also prepare a more advance texture projection method in the next tutorial.

1) Start BodyPaint3D by launching Cinema4D. Depends on the license you purchase, some has Bodypaint3D as standalone programme, some has it with Cinema4D. Either one will do the job.

2) When Cinema4D is launched. Start texture painting by changing the layout of the programme.
Window -> Layout -> BP UV Edit
You can, of course choose BP 3D Paint layout, but my personal preference is BP UV Edit as it opens up other tabs for me to see the textures and 3D view side by side, along with other useful tools below.

3) Import the model, in Obj format into Bodypaint by File -> Open. Navigate to the folder containing the Obj model.

4) When the model is loaded into Bodypaint3D it appears very tiny. Hit "o" key to zoom in selection. Make sure the object is selected before hitting the key.

5) Next, load the PSD texture into BodyPaint3D. The good thing about using BodyPaint3D is that it recognise most of the PSD features, such as Layers, Channels, Channel Masks created inside Photoshop. So, under Materials Tab, you shall see a new material already loaded there, with a big red cross. Click on the red cross and you have enable the material. Next, double click at the box area, as shown below, this will bring up "New Texture" window, choose "From Disc" and another window will pop up for you to choose the texture file. Select the prepared PSD file and hit OK button. If you save your working file different from the PSD, Bodypaint3D will ask you if you want to copy the texture to your working file directory. Ignore that if you want. Personally I would prefer to keep my working file and textures in the same directory.
